During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a new era” and an ambitious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
