Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
