Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
