The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
