A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
